As we settle into September routines and many families prepare to introduce purees or baby-led weaning, take a moment to evaluate your high chair. Proper seating alignment is the unsung hero of safe eating, optimal digestion, and healthy jaw development.
The 90-90-90 Alignment:
For peak feeding safety, your baby’s hips, knees, and ankles should all be resting at precise 90-degree angles. This prevents the pelvis from tilting backward and creates a secure, stable base so your baby can focus on the complex task of chewing, rather than fighting gravity to stay upright.
The Power of a Footrest:
Imagine trying to eat a meal while sitting on a high bar stool with your feet dangling. It takes immense core strength to balance. A solid, adjustable footrest gives babies the grounding they need, which drastically reduces wiggling, distraction, and fatigue during mealtime.
Trunk Support and Choking Prevention:
Babies should sit completely upright, never reclined. If the high chair seat is too deep or excessively wide, the baby will naturally slump. Slumping compresses the stomach and alters the angle of the airway, which can unnecessarily increase the risk of choking.
Unlocking Fine Motor Skills:
When the trunk and core are fully supported by a well-fitting chair, babies can free up their physical energy to practice the fine motor skills needed to grasp food and accurately bring it to their mouths.
PT Tips for Parents:
You absolutely don't need to buy a brand new, expensive chair. Observe your baby: are they leaning to one side, sliding down, or arching their back? You can tightly roll up dish towels to place beside their hips or behind their back for a snug, customized fit. If your high chair lacks a footrest, use a sturdy cardboard box or an exercise band wrapped tightly around the front legs to give them a place to plant their feet.
